Style Guides

A style guide or style manual is a set of standards for the writing and design of documents, either for general use or for a specific publication, organization or field. The implementation of a style guide provides uniformity in style and formatting within a document and across multiple documents. Style manuals dictate rules about grammar, punctuation, capitalization, preferred usage and abbreviation. The style manual also determines how you handle things like numbers and statistics and how you present information like tables, charts and graphs.

Most Mercer health science programs use  the AMA Manual of Style (2007) published by the American Medical Association. Different academic disciplines use different style manuals because they cite different types of materials and because they place a higher value on certain criteria. You may also be familiar with other style guides including American Psychological Association (APA) or Modern Language Association (MLA) or Chicago. The style guide is available at the Swilley Library Circulation Desk on permanent reserve. A concise citation guide is offered below.
